Patient
education is the key to optimizing the
results of LASIK eye surgery. At Florida
Vision Lasik we stress the importance
of healthy living and regularly scheduled
checkups in maintaining excellent vision
for a lifetime.
Many
LASIK eye surgery patients want to know
what they can do after their LASIK eye
surgery to further enhance their results.
With pristine weather and the beautiful
beaches, it would be easy to go enjoy
the outdoors. Instead we advise on many
of the daily activities that are important
in the lives of our patients.
LASIK eye surgery: Keys to Healthy
Vision Before and After Surgery
We sometimes
take our vision for granted as we rush
through busy days trying to multitask
at work or find quality time to spend
with our families. We can, however, take
active measures to protect the health
of our eyes by simply modifying a few
of our daily habits.
Guidelines
for LASIK eye surgery patients
Reading
distance and good sight
When you
are reading or writing, close-up work
is done best at a distance equal to that
between your knuckles and elbows. It is
easy to determine this distance. Simply
place your knuckles under your chin and
measure the distance from your knuckles
to your elbow. This will give you a rough
idea of optimal distance for reading materials.
Take
an occasional break when reading
Reducing eye strain is the key to optimizing
your eyesight. When working on your computer
or reading, look up every eight to ten
minutes and focus on different objects
across the room. Focusing from across
the room is less work for your eyes, so
looking up from time to time can help
keep your eyes relaxed.
Good
posture: You mother was right
Try to avoid
reading while lying on your back, side
or stomach. Sitting in an upright position
while reading, studying, or working on
the computer helps reduce eyestrain.
The
positive side of good lighting
It is important
to make sure that you have enough light
when doing close work tasks, and that
your room is generally well lit. Any type
of illumination should be positioned to
avoid glare from reading material. Positioning
lights behind and over your shoulder works
well for reading.
Positioning
for optimal reading
To ensure
that you get the most out of your reading
time, tilt your book so that it is raised
at an angle of about 20 degrees from your
desk. This will provide the best positioning
to reduce eyestrain.
The
101s of Television Viewing
While most
adults sit at a good distance from the
television, children often have to be
reminded to be between six to eight feet
away as a way to reduce eyestrain. Once
again, this is a situation where good
posture aids in reducing eyestrain.
Optimal
computer workstation set up: What you
should know
All of the
tips we have mentioned so far are extremely
important if you spend a significant amount
of time working on a computer. If done
incorrectly, computer work can be more
of a stressor on your eyes than reading
or studying from printed material.
It
is important to remember that glare from
the computer monitor can be a significant
cause of unnecessary eyestrain. It is
important to take the time to set up your
computer so that it is out of direct sunlight
and bright room light. It is also important
to remember to take breaks. Why not take
a short stretch while looking up from
your work?
